Projects for 2008

Outdoor Projects:

Help return natural beauty to our area.
     1. Fairview Park: plant trees, flowers, shrubs, and grasses, many of which will be native to the area. Also clean up the public areas and return them to their natural states.
     2. Old Settlers Park: Do landscaping, planting, and cleaning up of the park.
     3. Sherman Night Out: Encourage families to go outdoors between 6:30 and 9:00. Turn off televisions and other electronics. Go to parks for special events. (for example, walk in the park, enjoy activities at the park, attend Hot Summer Nights, go with your children to Hagerman Wildlife Preserve.)
Adult supervisors will be needed to work with Service Academy for Youth participants. Homes will be referred by the city. Scraping & painting will be done on the outsides of homes. Projects will be done on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
This will be the 2nd year that we will help build a home in partnership with Habitat for Humanity. We will need workers for all phases of home building: painters, carpenters, landscapers, etc.
This will be in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club.

Indoor Projects:
A meal is served to all city, county, state and federal employees in Sherman on Thursday, June 26. Volunteers are needed to make homemade desserts for the meal. Donations of new give-a-way items like ball caps, t-shirts, coolers, and extension cords will be accepted. Items may have company logos on them.
This will be a community-wide food drive held to restock the Salvation Army and Meals on Wheels pantries. Volunteers may bring donations of food or money to partner churches by June 22.
A one day camp on August 2nd, for survivors of traumatic brain injury. Adults are needed to help by bringing food, work in kitchen, or buddy with a camper. (Not responsible for care giving.) This camp is in partner with Great Days and will be held at the CCLC. Co-sponsors: Baylor Rehab. & UMW
Volunteers make blankets and gowns for newborn infants. On-going all week.
Teams of volunteers will visit nursing home residents on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

“Care Packages” will be provided to people in need of encouragement. Volunteers will be needed to help assemble the packages on Wednesday and Thursday and to deliver them on Friday. Sample-sized personal products, individually wrapped snack packages, notepads and pens, small packages of tissues, and baby diapers may be dropped off at any of the partner churches.

Adults will have the opportunity to read to children at the Glennie O’Hamm Center, at the Rose Hill Community Center, or at Key Memorial Learning Center and other childcare facilities in the area.

A service will be held and a meal will be served to the residents of the Boot Camp. Volunteers will be needed to make homemade desserts.
